IAAF World Championships 2011
Daegu, South Korea - 27th August - 4th September

Join us for the Athletics World Championships

Earlier this year we formed a new partnership with Graham Botley of Centresport Travel Ltd, specialist tour operators to athletics events for more than 30 years. Graham has organised tours to every World Championship since they started in Helsinki 1983 and is directly involved with the planning and delivery of this tour.

Daegu

The fourth city of South Korea (after Seoul, Pusan and Incheon) is a thriving, modern provincial capital about 150 miles south-east of Seoul. Its population of about two million includes very few westerners, so signage in English is rare (the new metro system is a notable exception) and there is very little English spoken or understood. It’s safe, easy to get around, taxis are plentiful and cheap, food/drink not expensive – we will have an interesting and enjoyable time here!

Standard Group Itinerary

  • Wed 24th August - leave UK on overnight Emirates flights to Seoul.
  • Thur 25th August – late afternoon arrival at Seoul airport and transfer to Daegu.
  • Frid 26th August - a full ‘free’ day for recovery from the long journey and exploring.
  • Sat 27th Aug - Sun 4th Sep - Nine days of the championship programme.
  • Mon 5th Sep - transfer to Seoul for late evening return flight to UK.

Flights

The best choice and the best value is with Emirates, with options from several UK airports to Seoul via Dubai. Here are three sample flight plans:

Departing from London Gatwick

24-Aug Gatwick - Dubai EK 16 dep. 1425 arr. 0015 (+1)
25-Aug Dubai - Seoul EK 322 dep. 0330 arr. 1635
05-Sep Seoul – Dubai EK 323 dep. 2355 arr. 0425 (+1)
06-Sep Dubai – Gatwick EK 29 dep. 0940 arr. 1420

Departing from London Heathrow

24-Aug Heathrow - Dubai EK 02 dep. 1415 arr. 0005 (+1)
25-Aug Dubai - Seoul EK 322 dep. 0330 arr. 1635
05-Sep Seoul – Dubai EK 323 dep. 2355 arr. 0425 (+1)
06-Sep Dubai – Heathrow EK 01 dep. 0745 arr. 1215

Departing from Manchester

24-Aug Manchester - Dubai EK 18 dep. 1410 arr. 0015 (+1)
25-Aug Dubai - Seoul EK 322 dep. 0330 arr. 1635
05-Sep Seoul – Dubai EK 323 dep. 2355 arr. 0425 (+1)
06-Sep Dubai – Manchester EK 17 dep. 0755 arr. 1225

Subject to availability and cost variation, it may also be possible to fly with Emirates from Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Tour Extension

Transfer from Daegu on the bullet train for a three-night stay at the excellent 4-star Seoul Riviera Hotel, overlooking the Han river in the Gangnam business district of this vibrant capital and Olympics host city. There are numerous sight-seeing opportunities, all arranged locally, which can be researched on the official city website www.visitseoul.net and www.city-discovery.com/seoul. Probably the most popular is a half-day tour to the DMZ (De-Militarized Zone), at the border with North Korea. You will have nearly four days here before heading to the airport for the late evening Emirates flight home:

08-Sep Seoul – Dubai EK 323 dep. 2355 arr. 0425 (+1)
09-Sep Dubai – Heathrow EK 0 dep. 0745 arr. 1215

Price per person for 3-night stopover

  • £195 (sharing twin/double room)
  • £390 (single room)

You can check out the hotel at www.hotelriviera.co.kr/eng/index.asp

Transfers

From Seoul airport to Daegu there are two options, both fast and comfortable – direct by luxury coach with reclining seats, or indirect by airport bus to Seoul station + bullet train. Either way the journey time is about five hrs, so we will experience both – luxury coach on arrival, bullet train for the return journey.

Accommodation

For an event of this scale, Daegu has desperately few western-style hotel rooms and many of them were never available - commandeered by the Local Organising Committee for VIPs and the media. We have found an interesting but unorthodox solution to this situation by coming to a special arrangement with the manager of the 4-star Hotel Taegu, which has been fully booked for more than a year. This involves using all the facilities of his excellent hotel - incl. a steak and pasta restaurant, busy and popular pub/restaurant with live musical entertainment, coffee shop, laundry, sauna and front-of-house staff - and sleeping in smart, well-appointed bedrooms in the motel literally next door - comfortably 4-star standard and recommended as perfectly workable and entirely satisfactory for our purpose.

This hotel + motel combination, in a busy commercial district, is also just 5 minutes walk from a metro station for a direct commute to the stadium (about 30 minutes and 60p each way), with a good choice of alternative restaurants/bars  nearby. The motel rooms are modern, attractively furnished with double beds, very well-appointed en suite bath/shower rooms, flat-screen televisions – and computers!

There is just one limitation – the absence of twin-bedded rooms means that those who would otherwise share a twin room will be allocated adjacent double rooms for single use.

For more information on the hotel take a look at  www.teaguhotel.co.kr

Travel Insurance

It is very unwise to undertake such a long-haul trip without the protection of travel insurance, so we insist upon it. If you don’t already have it, we can recommend EssentialTravel.co.uk
