IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships 2012
Istanbul, 9th - 11th March 2012

Join us in Turkey...

After London and Moscow, Istanbul is Europe’s third largest metropolis and historically, when known as Byzantium and Constantinople, was the capital of the Roman and Ottoman Empires. Uniquely bridging two continents, Istanbul is Turkey’s cultural and economic centre and parts of the old city, close to where we will stay, feature in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

This will be the first time Istanbul has hosted a global athletics championships. We invite you to join us in this amazing city for world-class athletics and a rich cultural experience where Europe meets Asia.

Anticipating that many will wish to include some sight-seeing in such a fascinating destination, we have made provision for extended stays either side of the championships.

The All Sports Travel team is proud that for this tour, we will again be teaming up with Centresport Travel Ltd and Graham Botley - specialist tour operator to athletics events for more than 30 years.

Five-Night Tour Itinerary

Because the athletics programme allows virtually no time to explore Istanbul during the basic four-night itinerary, we are strongly recommending a five-night itinerary, which allows a full free day for orientation and exploring the city before the championships start. Provision is also made for an extra day or two after the event.

  • Wed 7th Mar - Fly to Istanbul from your chosen UK airport. You will be met on arrival for private transfer to your hotel.
  • Thurs 8th Mar - A full day at leisure for independent sight-seeing.
    • A ‘hop-on, hop-off’ city bus tour is an optional extra.
  • Fri 9th & Sat 10th Mar - Individual and group arrangements for stadium transfers to the Atakoy Arena for morning and evening sessions.
  • Sun 11th Mar - Tour party boat trip on the Bosphorous Strait, with early lunch en route to the Arena for the final session starting 2pm.
  • Mon 12th Mar - Return flight to UK, or stay on for independent sight-seeing or tour extension to Gallipoli.

The competition venue is the purpose-built Atakoy Arena, still under construction, next to the impressive Sinan Erdem Dome which will accommodate the Accreditation Centre.

This fantastic indoor complex is on the south-west side of the city, close to the international airport and only 25-30 mins from our hotels in the city centre. Door-to-door coach transfers are included in your tour costs.

Note: Independent stadium transfers will take about 25-30 mins on a tram (cheap, fast, frequent and crowded) + 15 mins walk.

Information about the arena can be found here.

Programme & Tickets

Competition is packed into a three-day programme, with morning and evening sessions on Friday and Saturday plus Sunday afternoon, which is all finals.

The full programme can be seen here.

Total seating capacity of the Arena is 7,450. After provision for Media, IAAF Family, athletes and coaches, just over 5,000 seats are available for spectators, none of them on the home straight.

By special arrangement with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) we have an allocation of 120 best seats on the back straight, opposite both finish lines – numbered and reserved in Sector 114. Tickets are very reasonably priced at £30 for the full programme.
NB We do not provide a ’ticket only’ service.

Find the stadium plan here.

We are using only direct flights to Istanbul’s principal Ataturk airport - British Airways and Turkish Airlines daily from London/Heathrow plus Turkish Airlines from Manchester (daily) and Birmingham (not daily).

The minimum tour duration is five days/four nights, Thursday-Monday but we anticipate the majority will opt for travelling out Wednesday.

To maximise the opportunities afforded by this exceptional destination, we include options for an additional one, two or three day(s) on either end of the tour for sight-seeing and side-tripping, and a two-day / one-night guided tour extension to Gallipoli after the championships.

These are the flight options for which we have group allocations;

In this huge metropolitan city one of the constant features is traffic, so this has been a significant factor in our hotel choices. Following their comprehensive inspection visit (read here), your tour leaders confirm that this selection is ideal for our purpose.

They are in a cluster in the busy, atmospheric centre of the city, very close to each other, to the main route to the stadium and trams, to many restaurants and to most of the exceptional ‘must-do’ sights like the Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar and Topkapi Palace.

Crowne Plaza Old City - 5*
Our ‘top of the range’ luxury option offers all the style, sophistication and comforts associated with this world-renowned brand, with complimentary Turkish baths included. Ideally located and with commanding views out to the sea of Marmara, the Crowne Plaza has a variety of rooms and suites to choose from so is offered ‘on request’ to meet specific requirements. Hotel website >

Hotel Zurich - Superior 4*
This genuinely ‘de luxe’ 4-star property is fully deserving of the ‘superior’ tag – elegant, spacious bedrooms; bathrooms with ‘luxury amenities’; dining options incl. rooftop restaurant, bistro restaurant, café/bar and 24-hr room service; superb indoor pool and spa with sauna, Turkish baths and range of massage therapies.
A first-class experience! Hotel website >

Hotel Royal Istanbul - 4*
A brand new rooftop restaurant/bar with terrace, looking out over the sea of Marmara, is judged by your tour leaders to be of real value so this will be our tour HQ. Bedrooms and all public areas are spacious and furnished to a high standard and we are sure this hotel will be popular. If our allocation of 30 rooms here is fully subscribed, we have the nearby and similarly attractive Hotel Carlton available as a second 4* option. Hotel website >

All our hotels have the following features as standard – central heating, air conditioning, satellite TV with flat screen, free wi-fi, safebox, minibar, tea/coffee making facilities and ‘open buffet’ breakfast.

For triple, family or suite rooms and adapted rooms for wheelchair users,
contact us.

Private airport transfers are included in your tour cost. These will be provided by coach or minibus, depending on numbers, and will take 25-40 minutes depending on traffic.

Following the recommendation from your tour leaders inspection visit, we have also included transfers to the Atakoy Arena from all hotels for all five sessions.

for Australia and New Zealand than Armistice Day.

This two-day/one-night option, leaves Istanbul Monday morning and returns direct to the airport Tuesday evening for the flight to London with Turkish Airlines.

Guide price £145-£195 per person (minimum 10).
A detailed itinerary will be posted here early December.

Travel Management

Your tour leaders Graham Botley and Benjamin Woolnough will be with you in Istanbul from Wednesday to Monday.
