Battlefields

A wonderful opportunity to visit the great battlefield sites of the famous Zulu War of 1879. Most English tourists will be familiar with the acclaimed film ‘Zulu’ starring Michael Caine, however, nothing will prepare them for the emotions that will be aroused by the brilliant tour guides whose thought-provoking storytelling and dramatic description of events makes the history of the area come alive.

In 1879 the Zulu’s, a great warrior nation, crushed the British at the Battle of Isandlwana in the first conflict of the Anglo-Zulu war. Learn in gripping detail of the mesmerising bravery and mobility of the 20,000 man Zulu army, equipped with their traditional thrusting iron spears and cowhide shields, who overcame the couple of thousand British troops.

This is followed by the dramatic story of the brave British defence of Rorke’s Drift, where 139 British soldiers heroically defeated 4000 Zulu warriors, a battle after which eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded.

Take in the unique geography and topography of the area that make up a fantastic scenery and relax and watch the sun setting over Emakhosini, the Zulu Valley of Kings, beyond which is Ulundi the old Zulu capital where the 19th century warrior kings Shaka and Cetswayo had reigned over Africa’s greatest army.

In Cape Town you will see where South Africa as a country has come from and where it is going to, for both its history and its present are very complex. There is the District Six Museum, The Bo-Kaap Malay Quarter and, in Company Gardens, the Garden Synagogue which includes the Holocaust Museum. Stroll around the V & A Waterfront, appreciating the effervescence and vibes created in the shops, bars and restaurants, admire the beautiful and imposing Georgian style buildings of the Houses of Parliament and visit St George’s Cathedral which is known as Tutu’s Church. There are the market stalls, crafts and the tradition of haggling over prices in Green Market Square, the Castle of Good Hope, The South African Natural History Museum, The National Art Gallery which houses paintings, sculptures, and exhibitions from all over world as well as from the whole of South Africa and De Groote Kerk , a Dutch reform church, and opposite it is Slave Lodge which is now a cultural history museum.
